“I have the proper document”. Small edition. 2-color screenprint, 8 3/4 x 8 3/4 inches. The figure is holding a representation of the Constitution. The slightly hidden Jesus is part of a sign the says, “the good ship Jesus”, which was said to be the first boat to bring slaves to the Americas. The figure is bound and restricted, but strong. It symbolizes the might and perseverance in the face of the struggles in this nation of the African American. It is never meant to be sad. On the contrary, it shows the potential to endure many unending battles in the quest for equality and fairness. The 20 in the font used on the 20 dollar bill denotes not only the wealth of this country but a year in which the world grasped a better understanding of how those issues manifest themselves.
